This worksheet is different. Below is an itemized, fill-in-the-number calculator with real 2026 US prices, broken down by system, at three honest build levels. Price out *your* van, write your numbers in the blank column, add it up, and see exactly how many months of saving stand between you and the road.
How to use it:
- For each of the 10 systems, read the three example columns (Shoestring / Mid / Premium).
- Decide which tier fits *that system* — you can mix (a Shoestring kitchen with a Mid electrical system is totally normal).
- Write your number in the Your Build column.
- Copy your system totals into the Summary table at the end, add them up, and use the Savings & Timeline section to get your launch date.
Prices are 2026 US estimates for parts and materials only (DIY labor = free — that's the whole point). All three example columns assume you do the work yourself.
The Three Build Tiers at a Glance

> The single biggest lever: the van itself is 55–65% of your total. If you already own a suitable vehicle, delete the van line and your build drops to $2,100 / $5,680 / $12,250. That's how most beginners actually afford this — buy or use a van first, then build it out while living in it on weekends.
1. Van Purchase
The one thing you can't DIY your way around. Shoestring = an older high-mileage cargo van (think 2003–2011 Chevy Express / Ford E-series, 150k–200k miles). Mid = a newer used van (2013–2017 Transit / ProMaster, ~100k–150k miles). Premium = a low-mileage used Sprinter or Transit.

> DIY or pro? The purchase is all you — but always pay a mechanic $100–150 for a pre-purchase inspection before you buy. A rusted frame, a slipping transmission, or a tired engine can erase your entire build budget in one repair. Rust is the silent killer; walk away from a van with frame or floor rot no matter how cheap.
2. Insulation
Cheap to do, miserable to skip. Poor insulation drains your battery and makes the van an oven in summer and a fridge in winter.

3. Electrical
Your freedom system — it decides where you can park and whether you can work. Also the one place a mistake can start a fire, so respect it.

> DIY or pro? Wire the 12V DC side yourself by following the diagram in Bonus #1 — The Van Wiring Pack. With a correctly-sized fuse on every positive wire and the layout in that pack, this is beginner-safe and will save you $1,000+. Hire an auto-electrician for two things only if you're unsure: the DC-DC tie-in to your starter battery, and any 120V AC shore-power inlet. Bad wiring is the number-one cause of van fires — never guess on wire gauge; the Wiring Pack sizes it for you.
4. Water & Plumbing
Start simple. You can live comfortably out of jugs for a year and upgrade later.

5. Ventilation
One good roof fan does more for daily comfort than almost anything else in the van. Don't skip it to save $150.

> DIY or pro? DIY-able — but it means cutting a 14"×14" hole in your roof, the scariest cut for a beginner. Measure twice, seal with butyl tape *and* self-leveling sealant. If that cut terrifies you, pay a van shop $150–300 to cut and seal it, then wire the fan yourself.
6. Bed & Furniture
The bed platform is the easiest big win in the whole build. Cabinetry is where budgets balloon.

> DIY or pro? A fixed bed platform is easy DIY with a circular saw and a drill. Cabinetry is the big fork in the road: DIY it and save $1,000–2,000, or pay a carpenter for a finished, furniture-grade look. Most beginners DIY the platform and storage, then upgrade cabinets later.
7. Kitchen
You can feed yourself well out of one burner and a cooler. A 12V compressor fridge is the upgrade everyone loves most.

> DIY or pro? All DIY. A 12V fridge is plug-and-play. Mount propane cooktops securely and always crack a window / run the fan — carbon monoxide is real. An induction cooktop needs the Premium electrical system to run, so don't pair it with a small battery.
8. Flooring & Walls
Pure DIY territory, and where cheap materials look surprisingly good.

9. Safety
The cheapest lifesaving money you will ever spend. This is non-negotiable at every tier, including Shoestring.

Savings & Timeline — When Can You Actually Go?
Now the whole point: turn your total into a launch date.
The formula:

Two moves that collapse those timelines:
- Already own a van? Subtract it. A Shoestring build on a van you already have is just ~$2,100 — roughly 4 months at $500/mo, not two years.
- Build incrementally. Buy the van first (the big chunk), get it road-legal and sleepable for a few hundred dollars, move in, and finish the build on weekends while you're *already* saving on rent. Most beginners never save the full $15k in a lump — they roll rent savings straight into the build.
