Batch setup
- Record wax brand, jar diameter, wick series, and wick size.
- Log fragrance oil percentage by weight.
- Note pour temperature and room temperature.
- Label every test candle before curing.
- Cure long enough before the first burn test.
Burn test
- Trim wick to 1/4 inch before lighting.
- Burn 2-4 hours or until melt pool reaches edge.
- Track flame height, soot, mushrooming, and hot throw.
- Stop unsafe tests immediately.
- Change only one variable in the next test.
Common fixes
- Tunneling: test a hotter or larger wick.
- Sooting: test a smaller wick or lower fragrance load.
- Weak scent: extend cure time before changing oil.
- Wet spots: adjust cooling environment.
- Rough tops: review pour temperature and cooling speed.
